Jesse Monongya - Navajo/Hopi Multi-Stone 14K Gold Necklace and Double-Sided Pendant, 187.3g, 24" long, 2.25" x 2.75" reversible pendant. Description:Side A: Black Night Sky (Acoma jet) with Halley's Comet, Saturn, full moon, and various night scenes. Side B: Sunset (opal) and various corals with the Navajo Sun Face; the middle portion of the sunset is "Shanidiin", which is the Navajo language for "new beginning." The animal pendants along the necklace symbolize Jesse Monongya's upbringing on the Navajo Reservation to include sheep, jack rabbit, dear, turtle (which represents the grandmother who carries the universe on her back), and more. Includes Australian coral, Italian coral, South Pacific coral, Mediterranean coral, and white Hawaiian coral; as well as lapis lazuli, jet, Australian opal, turquoise, and mother of pearl. Provenance: Acquired from Frances Hamilton White Collection (1933-2021). Frances Hamilton White was known for her exquisite taste in Native American Art and spent a lifetime carefully curating, adding only the best examples to her collection. Her extensive painting collection was recently sold at Christie's. The owner purchased this necklace in 2001 from Jesse Monongya Studios in Scottsdale, Arizona.
