John Forrest London Fusee Sterling Silver Pocket Watch
John Forrest London Fusee Sterling Silver Pocket Watch
Item Details
Description
This is an antique fusee movement pocket watch attributed to John Forrest of London, England in the 19th century. Rendered in fine sterling silver, the open face case features ornate engraved details and flowers. The back of the case appears to be accented with rose gold, but we were unable to test it to know for certain. The large dial marked with Roman Numerals and has a sub-dial for the seconds hand. The plate of the key wound movement is marked: "Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty". Numbered 76609. John Forrest worked as a watchmaker circa 1850s until his death in 1876. He is work is noted for exceptional precision and craftsmanship. Upon his death, other, less scrupulous, watchmakers used Forrest's name to place on their own work. As such, it is difficult to discern if the watch is truly a Forrest piece, or a later 19th century model. The maker of this particular sterling silver case was Albert Curtis of Chester. The date code mark is a "P" indicating the year of manufacture as 1898. The discrepancy in dates leads to some doubt as to whether this watch is indeed a John Forrest. It is possible that the case was made for the movement long after the fusee was manufactured. In any case, though it seems John Forrest did have the rights to the claim "Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty", the watchmakers who used his name in later years did not also have those rights. In 1891 there was a court case, which dealt with the misuse of "Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty" on watches claiming to have been made by Forrest. Regardless of the convolution of true manufacturer, this fine watch does exhibit exceptional craftsmanship and style.
Dimensions: The total length of the case including the bow is 3". The case diameter is 2 1/8".
Total Weight: 146.1g
