Description
**First Time At Auction**
Africa, Madagascar, late Cretaceous, ca. 71 million years ago. A lovely pendant made of a fossilized ammonite with iridescent hues, set in a sterling silver setting. The pendant includes a drop-form suspension bail that strung on a cord with a lobster clasp as a ready to wear necklace! The ammonite shell is preserved with great details such as the textual ridges and a fiery luster of red and orange that catches the light in dazzling chromatic shifts. The iridescence is due to aragonite on the surface, and some ammonites are highly prized for jewelry and considered gemstone quality or "ammolite." Ammolite is very rare and only comes from Canada - however, under similar conditions ammonites from around the world can produce the amazing fiery hues! Size (ammonite): 1.6" L x 1.25" W (4.1 cm x 3.2 cm); (cord): 21" L (53.3 cm); sterling silver quality: 92.5% or higher; weight: 27.7 grams
Provenance: ex-Sedona, Arizona, USA collection
