Description
1662-c.1700 A.D. A silver cufflink element of Lewis form 1, type A; discoid in plan featuring a pressed design composed of two crowned hearts; edge turned down at an angle of c.45 degrees; concave reverse housing a central loop, now split with one edge pushed into the centre, creating a full loop. 0.65 grams, 14 mm (5/8 in.) Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK, on 21 June 2014. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) with record number IOW-9707F5, and accompanied by a copy of the PAS report. Declared as Treasure under the Treasure Act with reference number 2014 T433, and accompanied by a letter from the British Museum to HM Coroner stating the find is to be returned to the finder. Cufflinks and other dress fittings such as buttons featuring the crowned conjoined hearts design were originally conceived to commemorate the marriage of king Charles II of England to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, although the design continued as a general symbol of love and/or marriage.
