Description
15th-16th century A.D. A bronze finger ring with a thin circular hoop, discoid bezel with central cross pattée and a cross crosslet to each spandrel. Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, item 642, for the type. 4.42 grams, 20.08 mm overall, 16.46 mm internal diameter (approximate size British K 1/2, USA 5 1/2, Europe 10.58, Japan 10) (3/4 in.) German art market before 2000. With a European gentleman living in the UK. Property of a Surrey gentleman. The heraldic cross of this ring, called the cross crosslet, consists of four Latin crosses arranged at right angles to each other, with the top facing north, south, east and west. In the Middle Ages, it became a symbol for the worldwide evangelisation of the Gospel, and a common interpretation is that it represented the four evangelists. [No Reserve]
