Description
13th-14th century A.D. A hollow-formed terminal or knife handle modelled in the round as a heraldic lion wearing an arched crown ornamented with fleurs, holding a narrow shield or a sword before, with lateral perforation through the mouth. 20.51 grams, 63 mm (2 1/2 in.) Found Leicester, Leicestershire, UK. The crowned lion appears on the English royal arms, usually thrice, and the form of the crown with prominent fleurs is similar to that seen on the English medieval silver coins of Edward I, from 1272 A.D. and later issues.
