Description
5th-6th century A.D. A small-long brooch composed of a rectangular head plate, shallow bow and tapering foot plate with waisted sides, the head and foot decorated with stamped dashes, decorative shallow grooves to the bow; remains of pin lug and catch plate to reverse. Cf. MacGregor, A. and Bolick, E., A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1993, p.134, fig.15.36, for similar. 5.53 grams, 34 mm (1 3/8 in.) Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK, on 3 May 2014. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer with reference numbers SZ 39937 and BNG 86961. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) with record number IOW-6A70C3, and accompanied by a copy of the PAS report. Dated 'c.475-c.600' by the Portable Antiquities Scheme. [No Reserve]
