Item Details
Description
3rd-1st millennium B.C. A group of ten stamp seals including four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-618) 'Stamp Seal of White Stone 13 x 13 x 6 mm. This has a round face, with notched edges, and a convex back which rises to a pierced loop. The design on the face consists of a central drill hole, and around it four triangular groups of four drill holes each. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is little worn and damaged, but generally in good condition.'; (U-211) 'Stamp Seal of Green/Black Stone 33 x 32 x 18 mm. This has a roughly flat face, and convex back which rises in the centre to a pierced loop. The design engraved on the face is a rosette achieved with drill holes, with central dot and around it six 'petals' of unequal size. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is worn and a little damaged, but the design is still clear.'; (V-644) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Cream Stone 14 x 14 x 5 mm. This is a round disc with convex faces, pierced through the sort vertical sides. The one face has a pattern of hatched lines: a central circle with four points radiating from it to the sides cutting through two further concentric circles. The other face has a design of hatched strokes, perhaps meant as a plant or as three birds on the wing. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000 B.C. It is a rare type and in good condition save for damage to one side, which, however, does not obscure the design.'; (T-616) 'Stamp Seal of White Stone 15 x 14.5 x 8 mm. This has a round flat face and convex sides that rise to a pierced loop. The design on the face consists of a central drill hole, and triangular groups of drill holes around it. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. Its character is still quite clear, but it is a little damaged and the surface of the stone is corroded.' 75 grams total, 13-39 mm (1/2 - 1 1/2 in.) Acquired 1980s-early 1990s. Property of a West London businessman. Academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. Accompanied by four scholarly notes issued by the late Professor W.G. Lambert; collection numbers 83, R-679, R-928, T-306, T-618, T-616, V-211, V-644, W-308, Y-995. Dr. Bonewitz notes: 'The seals are made from serpentine (2), bronze (1), limestone (3), agate (2), and haematite (1).' [10]
