Description
12th-6th century B.C. A bronze penannular round-section bracelet with the terminals in the form of serpent heads. See similar bracelets in Muscarella, O.W., Bronze and Iron Ancient Near Eastern Artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1988, pp.35-36. 64 grams, 96 mm diameter (3 3/4 in.) Early 1990s London collection. Acquired on the UK art market. From a private collection, Lancashire, UK. Bracelets with animal-head terminals were very common in Iran, Assyria, and the Caucasus in the Iron Age I Period, but continued into the Achaemenian period and beyond. According to scholars like Muscarella and Moorey, the serpent head was commonly used in bracelets and it was probably the earliest type animal-head terminal type to be used in the Near East.
