Description
3rd-4th century A.D. A gold crossbow fibula brooch with three collared and facetted knop finials to the head, pierced stylised zoomorphic motifs to the bar, deep bow, rectangular footplate, coiled wire sleeve at the junction between bow and foot, transverse grooves and decorative notches to the foot; later geometric motifs to the bow and foot with niello infill, also later Latin inscription to one side face of the bow 'SPES BONA' for 'good hope'; accompanied by a custom-made display stand. 19.06 grams, 62 mm (38.2 grams total, 92 mm high including stand) (2 3/8 in. (3 5/8 in.)). Ex private French collection, 1980s. UK private collection. Such crossbow brooches were used to fasten cloaks at the neck. This example was likely intended for wear by a senior member of the imperial staff.
