Description
c.2nd century B.C.-2nd century A.D. A carved marble grinding stone or pestle composed of a squat discoid body and tapering cylindrical handle with ledge. See Hargis, M.B., A Mortarium at Cetamura del Chianti in context, Florida State University, 2007, fig.14 (Golini Tomb, Orvieto), for the employment of a similar pestle. 300 grams, 6.4 cm diameter (2 5/8 in.) Acquired early to mid 20th century. Private collection, Sussex, UK. Helios Gallery, Wiltshire, UK, 2010. Ian Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, formed since 1985. The Roman word for such instrument was pistillum (pounder) from which the English word pestle derives. For the preparation of drugs, the Roman poet Juvenal used both mortarium and pistillum, reflecting the employment of this instrument by pharmacists and apothecaries, as well as the use in the kitchen.
