Description
The star of the pottery selection for this auction is this amazing Edgefield storage jar, the only known example of signed pottery from the second known and documented enslaved potter known as ABRAM, provenance being of the Tony Shank Collection once offered in the famous Southern Pottery Collectors Society auction but at that time very little was known if any of the enslaved potter working alongside DAVE DRAKE who is known as ABRAM. Archeology points us to a shard that was dug at the Stoney Bluff site with the name DAVE and ABRAM along with the L MILES stamp. There are so many ways one could praise this stellar Edgefield Jar. It was turned at Stoney Bluff at the Lewis Miles shop, but it has not been determined if the pot was turned by Dave and marked by him with what appears the incised word 'Abram', or this far lesser-known enslaved potter ABRAM himself may have signed the jar. nonetheless, this is the only known full example of such piece baring the important name of one of history's few documented enslaved potters of the Edgefield district. The L Miles Pottery stamp can be seen to the left of 'Abram'. On the other side, also just below the jar lip, is an incised upside-down horseshoe & 4 puncture marks (denoting gallonage) both are very strong indications of Dave Drakes work. Stands 15.5" by 13".
Condition
Amazing, lip surface age ware from usage and minor chips on both impressive lug handles. One of chips likely occurred during or prior to firing, as it is glazed over.
