Having surrounded herself with avant garde artists all her life, it was natural that her fashion house’s creations would reflect it. She enlisted some of the most influential artists of the time to work with in the designing of sportswear, couture, fragrance bottles, advertising, and packaging. History has celebrated her collaborations with the likes of Alberto Giacometti, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Lenore Fini, Meret Oppenheim, Jean Schlumberger, Marcel Vertes, Jean Dunand, and others. Lost in time however, is her joint venture for Christmas 1940, with Fulco di Verdura, one of the most influential jewelry designers of the 20th century. Fulco di Verdura was a Sicilian Duke and head of jewelry for Coco Chanel – Elsa’s bitter rival. He went on to establish Verdura in the United States and like Schiaparelli, catered to socialites, celebrities, and royals. In 1940, a design patent (123,646) was granted to Fulco di Verdura for a “combined perfume container and pendant,” the design image shows the Shocking Scamp. Naturally, one exists in 14k gold and is presumed to have belonged to Elsa herself.
