Western Europe, France or England, Neoclassical, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a superb glass intaglio set in a gold-plated brass setting and made wearable with a modern cord. The ovoid intaglio is engraved with a double portraiture of Poseidon or Neptune and his wife, Amphitrite or Salacia both in profile. Poseidon is positioned in front with his hair flowing in long locks behind his head like tentacles, holding his trident. Behind but slightly forward is Amphitrite, her curls also seemingly blowing in a sea breeze. The bezel is comprised of a thick wire that encircles the periphery of the intaglio and has an open back. The terminal tips are graceful folded into a scrolling finial with several chain links creating the suspension bail. This lovely pendant is strung on a modern cord with a lobster clasp and is a wearable piece! Size (pendant): 1" L x 1" W (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm); (cord): 21" L (53.3 cm); weight: 4.2 grams
