Description
Silver Coin Ft. King Philip IV, Recovered from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha Shipwreck
Coin, 1.375" x 1.375", displayed gorgeously in a wood frame 12.5" x 13.5", along with a certificate of authenticity from "Treasure Salvors, Inc." The wooden frame has some chipping and scratching to the corners and verso.
The irregularly shaped coin was minted in the New World and was manufactured by cutting coin blanks from crudely cast bars of refined silver bullion; then clipped to the requisite weight, heated and hand-hammered between crudely engraved dies.
"On September 6, 1622, the heavily laden treasure galleon of King Philip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet struck a reef and sank in a raging storm near the Florida Keys. More than two hundred and sixty persons perished and tons of gold, silver and other precious cargo were lost to the sea. All attempts to locate the shipwreck failed until the location of the primary cultural deposit was made by Treasure Salvors, Inc., on July 20th, 1985."
We have seen these sell on eBay for $4,000-$5,000.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
