Emlen P. Etting Jr. Multimedia Painting "Of Time and the River", 1944
Measuring 8.5" x 12" (sight), No place, Ca. 1944. A multimedia artwork in pencil and watercolor or paint, by artist Emlen Etting. An interesting and somewhat abstract work featuring a floating female head next to a small table on which rests the book "Of Time and the River", with a vase of purple tulips. Signed at the lower right corner in pencil "Etting '44", with a small inscription "Homage to Thomas Wolfe." Near fine. Matted and framed to the overall size of 16.25" x 19.75".
Emlen Pope Etting Jr. (1905-1993) was an American artist who worked in the mediums of painting, sculpting, and filmmaking. After graduating from Harvard in 1928, he studied in Paris with artist Andrew Lhote before the outbreak of WWII. During the war, he served in the psychological warfare division. Afterward, he continued to work as a painter and sculptor, while also branching out into illustration. Today, his work is displayed in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Allentown Art Museum, and the Museum of American Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
