Item Details
Description
North America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A cast-brass cannon barrel of compact form that was meant to be mounted upon the back of a donkey or pack mule. The lengthy cylindrical armament features a pair of shallow astragal housings, a transverse trunnion, and a touch hole drilled into the top of the backend. The muzzle exterior is surrounded by a thick rim to partially protect the cannoneer from potential blowback, and rifling grooves within the mouth enabled the cannonball to exit the barrel in a spinning motion to increase its stability and accuracy. Cannon barrels like this example were likely used during military conflicts and could be easily transported across rough terrain on the backs of burros. Size (barrel): 16" L x 4.1" W (40.6 cm x 10.4 cm); (bore): 1" W (2.5 cm)
