BIOGRAPHY:
Inspired by the natural world, Howard Parfitt's paintings are based on his own experiences with wildlife and places.In his childhood he collected Brooke Bond tea cards and the artists who illustrated them, Charles Tunnicliffe and Sir Peter Scott became his heroes and were his first great influence.On leaving school and taking advice from his art teacher, he enrolled on a graphic design course at Southend Technical College. Graphics, however, did not sit well with his artistic sensibilities and disillusioned he left before the course finished.While taking on a series of different jobs Howard still painted in his spare time and started taking on commissions. Subject matter included vintage aircraft, cars, historical sailing ships, Thames barges, pet portraits, landscapes and the occassional wildlife subject that rekindled his interest in the natural world. This was a valuable self learning period.In 1987 a successful one man exhibition at Foyles in London led to his work being exhibited in the United States, Switzerland and the U.K.Field work is an important aspect of Howards work. In 2005 he travelled to Kanha, Bharatpur and Ranthambhore in Northern India to research tigers in the wild. The following year he travelled to South Luangwa in Zambia to research and explore some of Africa's spectacular wildlife. He has also travelled widely over the U.K. - the Scottish and Welsh highlands being among his favourite places.Using sketches and photographs taken in the field he works mainly in acrylics. He has also used pastel and oils in the past. Some pieces take many months to complete. Others can take more than a year, which he works on between other less demanding pieces.In 2009, 2011 and 2013 Howard exhibited for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation 'Wildlife Artist of the Year' exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London. His painting 'Tigers Walk' was highly commended.
