18th C. European / German Flintlock Rifle
Item Details
Description
Western / Central Europe, probably Germany, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. European rifle of lengthy form, with a stock carved from lustrous, caramel-hued hardwood and accentuated with brass fittings. The lengthy cylindrical barrel has a smooth interior lining and a wooden ram rod bearing a head carved from bone. Beneath the forestock is an articulated latch meant to secure the end of a hinged bayonet blade, hence why the ram rod housings are on the side of the barrel rather than beneath. The double-action flintlock firing mechanism is comprised of a hammer with a petite flint fragment, a frizzen and frizzen spring, and a smooth trigger housed within a brass trigger guard. The stock butt is lined with a brass plate, and a faint "C" is stamped on top of the back stock just behind the butt of the barrel. An attractive firearm covered in lustrous patina! Size (rifle): 53.1" L x 2.6" W (134.9 cm x 6.6 cm); (barrel): 38.3" L x 0.75" W (97.3 cm x 1.9 cm); (bore): 0.59" W (1.5 cm)
