Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved whale tooth ivory netsuke that functions as a drawstring toggle, inlaid with a repousse brass panel. The repousse inlay depicts a chubby cheeked figure holding a fan and wearing a triangular cap, assessing fruit hanging from a tree branch. The cylindrical tooth is slightly curved, the root end has an empty pulp cavity that extends a short way into the tooth center. The toggle holes are hand drilled through one side for threading this piece on a cord- perhaps as part of a tobacco pouch. Size: 3" L x 0.8" W (7.6 cm x 2 cm)
