Central Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. 11th century CE. A lovely fragment of a stone relief panel, skillfully hand-carved to show the upper body of a Hindu goddess, perhaps Durga, in the lower left and a kneeling male in the upper right. Crowned by an elaborate, semi-circular headdress, the serene deity presents a round visage with downcast eyes beneath arched brows, a petite nose, and a closed mouth. Though bare-chested, her body is heavily adorned with necklaces, armbands, and strings of beads that drape down between her bulbous breasts. One of her many arms rises behind her to hold an object resembling a conch shell. Alternatively, the male figure wears a conical headdress as he holds a long bow with both hands. Size: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

Fragment of a larger piece. Expected nicks, chips, abrasions, and softening of detail throughout. Otherwise, very nice with great earthen deposits.
