Item Details
Description
Very Rare and unusual Navajo Manta / Blanket with Hand Spun Undyed Wool. First Quarter Of 19th Century. Size 148 cms x 108 cms (58ins x 42ins). Please see the structure and technical analysis of this weaving showing the following: each of these individual threads are spun as S2z (whereby each thread consists of two yarns spun in an S shape) - see image 1. The weaving comprises of one ivory 2-ply warp (consisting of two separate non-twisting threads that sit side by side to form one warp.) - see image 2. A single weft thread has been woven on the loom horizontally across two continuous (uncut) paired vertical ivory warps on a vertical loom - see image 3. The ivory wool selvedges (sides) are made of a continuous single ivory wool warp (which in turn is made up of two non-twisting threads that sit side by side). This continuous selvedge is formed by using a floating weft technique: using missed warps every 7-9 weft lines. The selvedges are part of the weave and have not been binded or attached at a later date. - see image 4. The undyed brown wool weft is spun as: S2z (each thread consists of two yarns spun in an S shape) - see image 5. The colour palette is primarily composed of natural shades of sheep s wool, spun together in a mix of browns. This weaving is light weight and supple.
