Containing 60 etched plates by Pyne, this was a pattern book for painters, each plate with multiple figures intended “to sketch the prominent , character and habits of the rustic” and produced in part at least in response “to the rage for making tours which has so long distinguished the British people...it has become the prevailing taste of the higher families to explore the country in search of the picturesque.” [Abbey, Life, 179; Prideaux, p. 142]. Original quarter-bound morocco with gilt lettering, a little worn at head and foot of spine, with lightly rubbed, marbled boards; pages clean and bright with minor, scattered spotting.
