Washington, 1911-1992, the body of flattened spherical form, with applied loop handle, tapering spout, raised on a cylindrical, hollow base, dark red and brown speckled glaze, unsigned, 11 x 12-1/8 x 3-1/2 in.

Note: Hoping to paint like muralist Diego Rivera, Mr. Ball earned a master's degree in fresco painting at University of Southern California. Soon he turned to pottery, jewelry, and sculpture. In a 1981 interview, Mr. Ball said he became even more inspired by teaching than his work as an artist and craftsman. Nonetheless, Mr. Ball's works appeared in 500 galleries in North America, Europe and Asia.
