Item Details
Description
Ken Edwards Stoneware (20th C., Arizona), pair of Tonal¡ ceramic armadillo sculptures, having coordinating color schemes, both signed

Tonal¡ pottery is a world-famous style, known as a true 'mestizo' art form. Originating with the Tonalteca people of central Mexico, pre-Hispanic Tonal¡ ceramics were known for their highly polished and burnished forms depicting forms seen in nature. With the arrival of Europeans, the people of Tonal¡ began to blend traditional burnishing techniques with lacquer brought over by Augustine missionaries. Tonal¡ ceramics became a household staple for wealthy families, and was regarded as a luxury product from the Americas.
