John 'Jack' Savitsky (American, 1910-1991), Three Gardening Pictures
the first a graphite on paper, signed and dated 1983 at lower right, titled "Crazy Dasys" (sic) at lower left, presented under glass in a gilt frame (Frame dimensions 5 x 11 in.); the second a Perma pen on paper, signed and dated 1989 at lower right, matted and framed under glass, a label to verso indicates this was purchased from Sterling Strauser (Frame dimensions 12 x 11 1/8 in.); the third a diptych, the top image with deer by the water, the bottom image of a horse drawn carriage (Frame dimensions 13 1/2 x 13 in.).
John Savitsky, also known as "Coal Miner Jack," was a coal miner around Lansford, Pennsylvania for over forty years. During his free time, he would paint signs for windows and trucks, as well as murals for local speakeasies. He was diagnosed with "black lung" in his fifties, and since he could no longer work in the mines, he took to painting full time. His work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
