Description
Painted and embroidered graveyard scene with several mourners beneath a weeping willow tree, surrounding a large marker with the attached inscription "To the memory of Mrs. Arietta Knickerbacker, who died March 27th, 1814. Aged 27 years; 'Weep not for me but for yourselves'" accented by two more in the background in the shade of a much smaller and greener weeping willow, one reading "John Knickerbacker, who died (...) and the other "to the memory of Elizabeth Knickerbacker, who died (...). The second bears a weeping young woman in black veil - perchance a self-portrait. The foreground and trees done in stumpwork and silk embroidery, the foreground heavy with flora. Ebonized and gilt matting bearing the name "Elizabeth Knickerbacker, 1815" (the year following Arietta's death). Behind glass, gilt frame with brief provenance penned to verso. 21" height, 22.5" width; frame: 28.25" height, 29" width
