With autograph letter signed, two full pages on the blanks on the back of the image, from Ezekiel D. Brown to John Givens, dated California, Placer County January the 14th 1852. The letter informs the recipient that Ezekiel and his partner Wade are yet alive, and inquires on the well being of folks at home and the state of affairs. He gives some information about mutual acquaintances from Camden County (Missouri), who are "pretty well scaterd over this country there is some of them that I know nothing about... samuel and william Wines is mining about Nevada and grassvalley I heard from them a few days ago they were well... I have under stood that there was a grate many people in the states preparing to cross the plains in the spring but I hope their will be none from south west missouri as I fear their is more persons here now from Missouris than wil do well mining and all other business in California has become very dull though persons can make from 6 to 10 dollars per day and hiring wages is $6 per day. But provisions intolerably high once in a while a doctor bill to pay and other expenses so persons will not make much clear money if they are not careful. Buying claims has proven the most fatal to us we have laid out considerable of money in this country for claims and are shure to lose money on every one of them... We expect to go to flooming the north fork of the American River where we are now living. It is very expensive but make or break is the game in this country..."
