Description
"Acrobats" numbered 8/40 and signed in pencil lower margin, 1939 color woodcut on wove paper by American artist Louis Schanker. Painter, printmaker, muralist, and WPA artist, Schanker was one of the "Whitney Ten", protesting the exclusion of abstract art in the Whitney Museum. His formative experiences include quitting school, joining the circus, working as a field hand, and painting in Paris. He taught at the New School for Social Research in New York and at Bard College. He is regarded as one of the most important printmakers of the 20th C. Frame: approx. 11 3/4" x 16 3/4".Sight: approx. 7 3/4" x 10".Provenance: Estate of Cayce Odom of Charlottesville, VA.
