Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 1250 to 800 BCE. A charming, hand-built pottery female figurine that is seated with legs cross in front and a fringed skirt across her waist, covering her knees. Her arms are curved and rest on her abdomen, just above her incised navel. Applied nodules form her breasts, and her head is stylized with classic slit formed eyes, pinched nose, and wide mouth that is slightly parted. Her remaining ear is adorned with a large earspool, and atop her head is a rounded headdress that is detailed with incised striations and an applied plait hangs down her spine. The skirt accentuates her waist and hips, as do her arms framing her nude chest, to emphasize her femininity and perhaps serve as a fertility idol.
