Central Asia or Eastern Iran, Samanid Empire, likely Nishapur, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. This is a fine earthenware bowl with abstract green and brown motifs atop a white glaze known as splash-sgraffito on the bowl's interior. The exterior is unglazed, with limited areas of green slip around the rim, and the piece rests on a petite ring foot and the thick walls curve inward. As the name suggests these splash-sgraffito pottery pieces were painted with dashes of green, ochre yellow, and brown pigments to create seemingly random pattern, covered with a transparent glaze, and during firing the pigments would run, creating a "splashed" surface. Repaired and restored from approximately 7 large pieces. New material and adhesive added along break lines and gaps. Overpainting to interior of bowl along break lines and over infill. Repairs are well done, and faint break lines are visible on the exterior. Mineral encrustations on exterior.
