Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Eastern Apulia/Gnathia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery vessel known as a lekythos with a spool-form foot, an egg-shaped body, a corseted neck surmounted by a funnel-form spout, and a strap handle arching along the verso. The black-glazed vessel is decorated with a band of zigzags beneath a densely crosshatched body - hence the name "net lekythos" - and a band of red pigment rests beneath a register of inversely corresponding cresting waves. The bottom of the neck is adorned with vertical frets, and only the areas above and beneath the foot are unglazed and undecorated. Size: 2.75" W x 6.25" H (7 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
