Description
This superb ring combines a favorite Medieval motif, the four point Star of Bethlehem with the Jerusalem Cross of the Crusades. See Ancient Rings, Pollio, p.30, bottom right for an example dated 10th-13th century. It is size 8 3/4 of exceptional proportions, with 5.5mm wide, deeply rounded band flaring to the shoulders which are shaped with transverse ridges, flanked by vertical reeding. The bezel is an inverted truncated cone. The face is engraved with the Star of Bethlehem enclosing a Jerusalem Cross, so names with centered cross beam and tripart terminals. That form is also known as the Crusader's cross, having been an element in the arms of Godfrey Bouillon which he wore during the First Crusade. Godfrey of Bouillon was a Frankish Knight of the First Crusade, known as Baron of the Holy Sepulcher and the Crusader King, ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem following its victorious siege in the First Crusade. For that reason, it is also known as the Jerusalem Cross. A magnificent ring traceable to the Crusades! Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
