Description
(1752 - 1844) Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1811-1835 during the Marshall and Taney court eras. L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., October 17, 1809, to former postmaster general Samuel Osgood (1747-1813). In part: '...It is stated that the balance due by John Swartwout...for monies which he received on account of internal revenue, has been paid. Be pleased to say whether this is the fact, and at the same time forward me a statement of the amount which has been paid to you...' Duvall also signs a franking signature on the integral address leaf. Lightly toned with scattered stains. John Swartwout (1770-1823) was a New York merchant, politician, and known associate of Aaron Burr.
