Description
An official printed copy of a report presented at a Senatorial session of the 51st Congress, 53pp. 8vo., Washington D.C., March 17, 1890, titled in part 'Letter from the Secretary of War...In Response to Senate Resolution of January 28, 1890, reports relative to the treatment of certain Apache Indians,', containing the text of statements or letters from members of the War Department or U.S. Army. The group of Apache Indians referenced were led by Chato (1854-1934) and visited Washington D.C. in 1886 as a peace delegation and for their service as scouts in the U.S. Army expedition to captured fellow Apache chief Geronimo. On their way back west, the group was arrested and deported to various Indian internment forts across the American south, until finally being settled on a reservation in Oklahoma. The reports seem to justify army actions as they describe Chato and his followers as friendly yet still potentially hostile. Moderately toned with chipping and completely disbound
