Signed in initials on board by Edward Weston, dated 1938. 46.205.4 in pencil on reverse. "On September 22, Edward and Charis were heading back to San Francisco for the opening of his show at the De Young Museum. He, however, had to stop to make a few pictures. Weston combined the light, form, and textures here to create an exhilarating effect. The triangular shape of the enormous rock is mirrored in the surf line below it, the homogeneously illuminated sand is juxtaposed to the glistening water, while the background recedes in delicately rendered atmospheric perspective." -Conger, 1131/1937.
