Description
Belva Ann Lockwood, 1830-1917. American lawyer, the first woman to be admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court (1879). Leader of the women's rights movement, she ran for President in 1884 and 1888 on the National Equal Rights partyticket. This is a small ivory card with gilt edges on which she has written "Belva A. Lockwood / Atty, & Solicitor / 619 F. St. N.W. Wash. D.C." This was undoubtedly used as her calling card, and therefore was probably written shortly after shewas admitted to the bar in 1873. Purchased at W. Graham Arader III in Philadelphia, PA.
