Lock & Son, Oxford, an unusual 19th century skeletonized verge fusee pocket watch, the signed, key wind movement with extensively skeletonized and engraved gilt plates, wheels with well executed five and six spoke crossings, and polished steel six arm balance, sterling silver, engine turned, hinged back and bezel open face case, the dome with crystal allowing observation of the movement, and with London hallmark and date letter for the year 1840, roman numeral white enamel peripheral chapter ring, allowing a clear view of the decorative bottom plate, motion work, and set up ratchet, blued steel Breguet style hands, 44mm
Condition
CASE: Tarnish; Very fine scratches on outer surface of case; Back with tiny, shallow dent; Crystal replaced, and with fine scratches; Bezel with slim gap at band when closed, snap worn; Engine turning with minor wear; Observation dome with scratch; Precious metal content marked. DIAL: Restored, and with a few cracks in coating. HANDS: Mismatched. MOVEMENT PLATES: Minor scratches on balance cock; front edge of balance cock relieved to clear rear crystal; A few screws with minor scratches and loss to blue; Set up ratchet with fine scratches and losses to blue. MOVEMENT FUNCTION: Running order (winds, sets and ticks).
