Ilya Bolotowsky was born in Russia and arrived in New York in 1923. Bolotowsky joined The Ten, a band of nine artists including Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko that advocated for new forms of abstraction. His first solo museum exhibition was in 1974 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Today, Bolotowsky’s art is in the permanent collection of The Met, The MoMA, and the Smithsonian.
