Description

Rare American Federal Period Sheraton Style Mahogany Duncan Phyfe Sofa, New York, c.1790's, the crestrail carved with bows holding wheat sheaves, centering carved drapery swags over an upholstered back, with reeded turned-in arms on fluted turned supports, over upholstered seat raised on turned fluted legs. A rare and early form. Dimensions: 32 on.h. x 72 in.w. x 27 in.d.

Provenance: M.Roger Clapp Estate, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Clapp was the CEO and Chairman of Lubrizol Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio.

Condition

Loss to relief carved ribbon end at left side, approximately 1 in. l. Small loss to molding in that section at right. Center carved section with gouge to molded detail at left side and possible repair to ribbon end at right side. Gouges and repair to scroll arm on left, concentric circle detail at left end of top rail with lost lower half. Lower half re-glued to concentric circle detail at right end of top rail. Other gouges, wear and imperfections from age and use. Upholstery with some water stains and showing very light wear.
