Description
Verdure" tapestry, possibly Gobelins. France, 17th century.
In wool. Hand-woven.
Measurements: 153 x 163 cm.
French tapestry, possibly from the Manufacture Royales des Gobelins in Paris, in which a hunting scene is represented surrounded by a leafy landscape. Such scenes are known as verdure or millefleur, a style characterised by the use of a large number of plants or flowers of different sizes. In many cases these are arranged in the lower area, and are placed in an ascending manner, creating a scene of vegetation; in many other cases they show scenes of a realistic nature in which the landscape is the protagonist. This style is very common in Europe and began to develop in the Middle Ages.
