Four Continental Sword and "Gadget" Walking Sticks
late 19th/early 20th century, including:
a Continental walking stick with figural carved bone pommel handle, in the form of a grinning man and drawing to reveal a steel sword of square section, with brass collar, bamboo shaft and brass ferrule, l. 36-1/4";
a German walking stick with figural carved root palm-grip handle in the form of a maiden's head with flowing hair, with .800 silver collar, blackthorn shaft and horn ferrule, the handle unscrewing to reveal a steel seeding spike, l. 36"; and
a Continental walking stick with silver capstick handle decorated with diaper pattern and armorial cartouche, the cap embossed with a cross mantled with antlers and banded by pinecones, with ebonized wood shaft and brass ferrule, the handle drawing to reveal a steel sword of square section, l. 37"; and
a Continental walking stick with horn pommel handle, malacca shaft and horn ferrule, the handle drawing to reveal a steel sword of lozenge section, l. 35-1/2".
