ABOUT THE ART
Iconic Japanese designer clothing company EVISU was founded in Osaka Japan in 1991 and is named after the Japanese God of prosperity Ebisu. Initially only around 14 pairs of jeans per day were created, while today EVISU represents one of the ultimate denim must haves. Known for subverting tradition and reinventing the familiar, EVISU decided to team up with someone with similar practicie. The choice was a British artist D*Face, who is known for his mixed style influenced by comic books, pop culture and skateboard graphics.
The artist and EVISU decided to cooperate on the company's new collection. For the EVISU x D*FACE capsule collection, the playful portrait of the Japanese god EBISU, baby Godhead in English, is combined with D*Face’s iconic dog to create a collaboration of balanced sophistication and humor. The art installation is currently on display at the EVISU Hong Kong flagship store in parallel with D*Face’s first solo show in Asia, Honestly Dishonest at Above Second Gallery.
Both shows feature D*Face’s distinctive style defined by the artist himself as "aPopcalyptic": a satirical look at consumerism and our obsession with fame, pop culture, consumer culture and advertising. D*Face’s new works explore society’s increasing appetite for information, the latest feed, the most recent tweet or post rolling into the past on the wave of a finger: like, unlike, follow, unfollow, and what happens to this information we digest. In his characteristic manner, D*Face reworks and subverts this constant barrage of images and information we knowingly and unknowingly absorb.
The artist obviously keeps himself busy in Hong Kong with two parallel shows and even completing a large public mural at PMQ Elevator.
