Farmer Rents Slave for One Year, then Renews Rental for Another Year

With this promissory note, Marion F. Todd agreed to rent the slave Irvine for $102.50 for the year 1860 from the estate of Durrett White. Todd also agreed to feed and house the slave and to provide him with a list of specified clothing. In December 1860, he agreed to rent Irvine for another year for $107.50.

$102 50 On or before the 25 Dec next I promise to pay N Gentry & J M Shackelford Exrs of Durrett White decd One hundred and two dollars & 50 cents for the hire of a negro boy named Irvine from now until that time. I agree to treat said boy humanely give him good diet & lodging and for his next summer wear give him two shirts and 2 pair pants & for winter wear two more new shirts of good strong cotton a good new Jones sack coat two new pair Jones pants & vest with sleeves 2 pair socks, good new parr of slogg boots, a good hat and a mackinaw blanket worth $3.00 & return him at the end of the time well clothed. Marion F. Todd (1825-1898) was born in Kentucky. About 1851, he married Amanda J. Simmons (1833-1901) in Madison County, Kentucky. In 1860, he was a farmer in Madison County with $4,800 in real estate and $3,500 in personal property.

James M. Shackelford (1812-1867) was born in Richmond, Kentucky. In 1836, he married Priscilla L. Culbertson (1814-1844) in Sangamon County, Illinois, and they had four children. In 1846, he married Melissa Walker (1815-1863) in Madison County, Kentucky, and they had four children. In 1860, he was the clerk of the Madison County Court, and he owned one slave.

Durrett White (1798-1858) was born in Kentucky. He married Lucy Clark in 1801, and they had a son, Durrett White (1829-1862). In 1835, he married Mary White (1799-1857). He died in Richmond, Kentucky.
