Description
Gene Kloss (American, 1903-1996) Keresan Dancers, 1962 Etching and drypoint on paper 13-3/4 x 11 inches (34.9 x 27.9 cm) (image) Ed. 30/50 Signed, numbered, titled, and dedicated in pencil along lower edge Gene Kloss was born in Oakland, California and first visited Taos in 1925 while honeymooning with her husband. She deeply admired the life and landscape of New Mexico and from that point on, split her time between Taos and Berkeley. Her etchings are highly contrasted, dramatic images and she has been called by critics "one of the most sensitive and sympathetic interpreters of the Southwest." Her work is found in many permanent collections, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and the Carnegie Institute. In July 1935 she was one of five artists in an all-women's show at the Rio Grande Art Gallery in Santa Fe. From 1933 to 1944 Kloss was the sole etcher employed by the . In 1935, she was one of three Taos artists who represented New Mexico at a Paris exhibition called "Three Centuries of Art in the United States". Kloss is considered one of the most important artists of her time, as well as one of the major printmakers of the 20th century. HID03101062020 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
