Cawston Ostrich Farm was billed as the first of it's kind in the United States, although it was not, it was the largest and most successful. Located in South Pasadena, this farm was opened in 1896 and became a huge tourist attraction. People came to see the birds, go for ostrich rides, buy feathered accessories or go on ostrich drawn carriage rides. Cawston had more than 100 ostrich and the feather wares were sold throughout the world. Although the feathered accessories for women went out of style around the end of the Victorian era, the ostrich farm was able to have continued success due to it's popularity. Cawston wanted to return to his native England, so in 1911, he sold his business for 1.25 million dollars to a group of bankers who continued to use the Cawston name. The farm closed in 1935. This box of feathers came from this now landmark farm. Box contains multiple feathers, they are fragile, but we did remove one to show the Cawston tag that was attached to each quill before being sent to the buyer. These feathers come in the original packaging.
