Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, Sioux, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a stunning child's vest made of buckskin and handstitched with hundreds, if not thousands, of glass seed beads. Nearly the entire exterior surface is covered with beadwork in white, red, cobalt, yellow, and green to create an abstract geometric pattern of triangular shapes on a white beaded ground with red edging. A leather cord threaded through the front panels cinches the waist coat together. This vest contains pictorial patterns of Native American origin. Sioux artisans usually worked with a white background using darker beads to contrast with the ground, and the most common color combination from traditional pieces are blue, yellow, red, and green. Much of the later beadwork that the Sioux tribes created were sold as tourist pieces and incorporated colors and imagery that were not as traditional and more appealing to other cultures. Size: 15" L x 14" W (38.1 cm x 35.6 cm)
Provenance: private Arlington, Virginia, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
