Description
"View From Sabbath-Day-Point, Lake George, N.Y." Oil on canvas, signed W.R. Miller 1876 bottom right, also signed, titled, and inscribed 806 Broadway S on stretcher verso. During the cataloging process, a discovery was made - the title and inscription on the stretcher were uncovered from beneath the original remnant backing paper, which had been pasted down. Note: William Rickarby Miller was the son of the English landscape painter Joseph Miller. He immigrated to America in 1844, eventually settling in New York City. A member of the Hudson River School, Rickarby's works are held in numerous private and museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

There is a small canvas patch at the lower left quadrant and light craquelure. Scattered spots of soiling. 2.75" W area of canvas reinforcement along the bottom left edge. Examination under blacklight does not reveal any inpainting.
