Description
Native American Hopi Polik Mana Kachina, Mid 20th C. Cottonwood, pigment, cloth shawl. Polik-mana or Butterfly Maiden is a spirit-being in Hopi mythology, who dances from flower to flower every spring, pollinating the fields and flowers and bringing life-giving rain to the Arizona desert. She is represented by a woman dancer at the yearly Butterfly Dance, a traditional initiation rite for Hopi girls. Size: 20'' x 10'' x 5'' (51 x 25 x 13 cm). Property from the Jim and Kit Horne Collection.
