Mexican Santiago Matamoros on Horseback, 19th C. Carved and painted wood Santo depicting a bearded Santiago Matamoros, also known as Saint James The Greater, or Santiago the Moor Slayer, as a rider on horseback, wearing royal blue vestments with a red cross on his chest, a conquistador-type helmet also adorned with a red cross, and black boots. He triumphantly raises his sword as his white horse is rears up. The figure and horse carved separately and joined via a dowel. Inlaid blue glass eyes for the Moor Slayer and brown glass eyes for the horse; the horse's tail is made from actual horse hair. The pair are mounted on a rectangular wooden stand.
